Alton lake re-designThe rejuvenation of this Hampshire lake was partnered with a longstanding associate company of PHB. The existing lake was de-silted and re-dug to a new design, incorporating a peninsula, island and beach approach. Set in a private valley of mixed pasture and woodland the lake was excavated to compliment the existing vistas and contours. This area of the Hampshire Downs is chalk and flint and the so lake would therefore require a synthetic liner. Given the nature of the subsoil careful consideration was given to the particular underlay used and the methods of lining the new lake. An existing nearby borehole was used to fill the liner and balance the water levels long term. This required the installation of an up rated electrical supply to the pump which was carefully trenched from the outbuildings. A similar hard edged system as used at Ropley was employed to create the edge of the lake with some areas overlaid with topsoil to allow planting and a soft looking bank. A green oak landing stage was constructed and the entire area re-graded and seeded with wild flower and pasture grassland. The overall effect was finished with the inclusion of the beach, rockwork and planting by our associates.
