Upham pond restoration

Another restoration job in the Hampshire countryside, a typical English duck pond in the village green, a bit forlorn and silted up. The pond was pumped down and de-silted to a local farm with minimum disruption and impact to the setting. A butyl liner was installed with a brick edge fitted to the approach side of the pond giving a clear outlook over the water from the village side. The remaining banks were overlaid with imported clay and topsoil for planting.

Much hard work was carried out by local residents to re-plant the surrounds with a variety of trees and shrubs to soften the pond into the green. Unfortunately over a period of years the wildfowl returned to the pond in large numbers and had created serious erosion on the farthest banks of the pond and exposed the recently fitted liner.

The affected banks were cleaned and liner retrieved and supported. Natural sandstone graded rock was used to overlay the liner and protect it from future erosion. In time the stone mellows and becomes green with algae allowing it to blend in with the scheme. The pond has now regained its charm as the village duck pond but now remains dabble proof !
